New Joe Interview

Monday, October 08, 2007 - 11:11 PM

It has been confirmed that Joe's character Al Large will return to DOC MARTIN in the next episode (4), due to be aired Monday, 15 October. He was not scheduled to appear in the first three episodes because he'd believed he'd be filming VINCENT, which unfortunately was not the case due to Ray Winstone getting a new job.

In an interview with People, Joe talks about his relationship with his girlfriend Liz and his fourteen-month old daughter Lyla. He also discusses his old work, as well as news of some new: an episode of "Poirot".

No More Doc Martin

Wednesday, September 12, 2007 - 6:11 PM

Main Doc Martin star, Martin Clunes, has revealed that due to ITV not commissioning another series, there will not be a new series of the show next year. He doesn't think it will be the end of the show but does want to take a year out from all acting.

"I don't want to do it next year. I'd quite like to take a break. I no way don't want to play the doc again. But I'd like to take a break from it for a year - grow my hair. I'd quite like to take a break from acting, actually."

Doc Martin Returns

Friday, November 04, 2005 - 11:24 AM

DOC MARTIN will return on Thursday, 10 November at 9pm on ITV.com.

Martin Clunes talks about filming the series in this article:

"There's a kind of acceptance of him, I think, by the village, but still he can't set foot outside without being called a tosser. Even the parrot calls him a tosser this series.

"But he's not going to change or take his suit off or lighten up. He considers what he does quite serious and thinks that largely people who aren't doctors are quite ignorant of it, so this makes him very insufferable."

Doc Martin Tops Ratings

Monday, January 17, 2005 - 9:51 AM

Joe's most recent TV work, "Doc Martin" has helped ITV to top the TV ratings for 2004.

ITV tops 2004 TV ratings

The BBC had only six of the top 20 TV shows of 2004, figures showed today.

ITV had 13 top-rated programmes including I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, The X Factor and A Touch of Frost.

The BBC did have the most watched programme of the year - coverage of the England v Portugal game in Euro 2004.

But its only other entries in the top 10 were EastEnders, Strictly Come Dancing and the Vicar of Dibley Christmas special.

EastEnders lagged behind rival Coronation Street - 16.3 million viewers tuned in to watch Karen and Steve McDonald's wedding day on Corrie, while the most watched episode of EastEnders managed just 14.8 million.

ITV had successes with its drama output, scoring ratings hits with Heartbeat, Life Begins starring Caroline Quentin and Doc Martin with Martin Clunes.

Audience figures for the 100 top rated shows of 2004 were published today by Broadcast magazine.

ITV dominated the top 20 and Channel 4 had one entry - nearly 10 million viewers for the final episode of Friends.

Of the top 100, more than one-tenth were reality shows, proving that they remain popular with audiences.

"For some people 2004 was the year of too much reality, although the audience response suggests it has not peaked," Broadcast said.

Doc Heals ITV

Thursday, September 23, 2004 - 11:16 PM

This year ITV has sturggled in the TV ratings war. This season they have hit back with new programmes and one of the most popular has been "Doc Martin". It has an audience of over nine million viewers and the only programme to have matched that figure was "Prime Suspect". Apparently "Doc Martin" is exactly what ITV have been searching for: 'big, noticeable dramas fronted by well-known actors, along the lines of the American TV model.'

Read the whole article: How To Heal An Ailing Channel.

"Doc Martin" was also chosen as The Daily Records' Terrestrial Pick Of The Day. Click on the link to read a brief synopsis of tonights episode.

Next week's episode will see Joe's character Al getting together with Doc Martin's receptionist Elaine Denham. To be shown on Thursday night at 9pm on ITV1.

The article also touches on the other things in Joe's life, including his past roles in "Servants", "POW" and "The Long Firm". Talking about his part in "Doc Martin" Joe says:

"It's good to get back to doing something in the present day. It's a different role for me and a step away from the period parts I've played before."

Doc Martin: Hit & Miss

Monday, September 13, 2004 - 11:07 PM

According to Media Week's stats, "Doc Martin" recieved 38.7% of the TV shares when the second episode was aired, equalling 8.4 million viewers, which was only 1 million less than the first episode pulled.

Whereas Caitlin Moran wrote a scathing article about British TV comedy series's titled Is this sit-crumb or mumedy?. In it she says about "Doc Martin":

"Really, programmes like these things ought not to be classified as comedies. It's not even 'comedy-drama,' which always has the suggestion that it's dealing with powerful situations, occasionally relieved by gallows humour - such as soldiers getting their legs blown off and then lighting the fags off their burning crotches and sighing 'Condor' .

"Not something where a grumpy doctor shouting 'Bugger off! All of you!' is considered a punchline. Or where the question: 'How have you managed to get an all-star cast of Martin Clunes, Celia Imrie, Stephanie Cole, Felicity Montague and Joe Absolom to commit to a lavish six-month shoot set in a beautiful Cornish village?' quietly goes off and solves itself."

But The Scotsman is more praising and says:

"Clunes is superb as the tetchy doctor who's scared of blood (the reason he packed in his starry career), and the rest of the cast list is packed with talent - Celia Imrie and Richard Johnson as the toffs, with Stephanie Cole as the doc's Aunt Joan. It glides like a Bentley, purrs like a Rolls."
